The U. S Pharmaceutical industry is worth an estimated $413 billion U.S. dollars. Wellness is big business. Our evolving medical conditions and concerns often require prescription drugs. As elected officials determine the fate of the Affordable Healthcare Act, the price of prescription drugs continues to skyrocket. For some, access to prescription drugs improves their quality of life, and for others there drugs are life saving. These life-saving and life-enhancing medications can come with a hefty price tag.

Here are a few things you can do to save money on prescriptions:

Talk to Your Doctor

Talking to your doctor seems obvious.  Be sure to ask your healthcare provider these cost cutting questions.

  1. Do you still need all of your current medications? If your health has recently improved, there is a possibility that you no longer need all of your medications or that you can reduce the dosage and frequency. Money saved.

Or

  1. Are there affordable alternatives available? Your doctor attends conferences and reads journal reviews on the latest treatment options and innovation in the field. There is a chance that a new generic option was recently approved or a holistic treatment is yielding promising results.

Order online and in bulk

I learned this trick from my sister. She orders from her insurance provider’s preferred mail order company and receives a three-month supply for the price of a two month supply. Over the course of a year this amounts to four months worth of savings! But it isn’t just about the money, if you value your time as much as you value your money, the added benefit of having your prescriptions delivered to your door is noteworthy. Contact your insurance company to inquire if they have a pharmacy by mail partners and if there are any incentives for filling your prescriptions in this manner.

In recent years the country has made notable strides to increase access to quality healthcare. Hopefully, a new measure to ensure access to affordable medications isn’t far behind. Until then, I hope these tips help you save and remain healthy.
