People said making clothes inside out was not proper. I disagreed, because clothes that are inside out are as beautiful as a cathedral. I think I’d go mad if I didn’t have a place to escape to. You can only go forward by making mistakes. Doing collections, doing fashion is like a non-stop dialogue. I remember walking the dog one day, I saw a car full of teenage girls, and one of them rolled down the window and yelled, ‘Marc Jacobs!’ in a French accent.

In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different. I like the things around me to be beautiful and slightly dreamy, with a feeling of worldliness. You can hide so much behind theatrics, and I don’t need to do that any more. I’ve treated the waistcoat as if it were a corset, so that it becomes the first layer in the process of putting clothes on the body. There is constant motion between layering and revealing. Doing collections, doing fashion is like a non-stop dialogue.

Dressing up. People just don’t do it anymore. We have to change that. Fashion fades, only style remains the same. My learning process is by eye alone; it’s not at all scientific. Fashion is made to become unfashionable. I adore the challenge of creating truly modern clothes, where a woman’s personality and sense of self are revealed. I want people to see the dress, but focus on the woman.

I get ideas about what’s essential when packing my suitcase. Luxury will be always around, no matter what happens in the world. Awkwardness gives me great comfort. I’ve never been cool, but I’ve felt cool. I’ve been in the cool place, but I wasn’t really cool – I was trying to pass for hip or cool. It’s the awkwardness that’s nice. I am never satisfied with myself and that is what keeps me going – I have no post-satisfaction. Age and size are only numbers. It’s the attitude you bring to clothes that make the difference.
